The Discrepancy of Animal Cruelty Laws

I usually write about Bipolar Disorder, Conversion Disorder, Celiac Disease, or Addiction. Today’s topic is important to me too.

I have always loved animals. Anyone who knows me can tell you that. Animal lives saved- 3   Human lives saved- 0  It doesn’t mean I hate humans, I just like animals more. They depend on us for food and shelter. They can’t tell us when something is wrong. Kind of like babies. I do well with babies too.

On my homepage there is a story of a Memphis woman being sentenced to 2 years in prison for leaving her puppy in a hot car. The puppy died.

This made me think. I know in my state that we have had worse cases with lesser sentences. So I looked into some things.

Right now the maximum sentence for Animal Cruelty is 2 years. Keep that in mind as you read on.

In 2013 a man was sentenced to 5 months for killing his girlfriend’s small mixed breed dog by breaking it’s neck, he also held a knife to the girlfriend’s throat. (R.I.)

A 44 year old man is sentenced to 2 years for smashing a Chihuahua’s skull in and then throwing it at his ex-girlfriend’s car as she drove away. He had other charges pending. (R.I) 2014

A 27 year old man was convicted of smashing the skull of a Chihuahua named Princess. He received 18 months for violating probation on an earlier weapons charge and a 2 year suspended sentence for killing the dog. (MA) 2013

FBI studies show that Animal Cruelty accompanied some of the most infamous serial killer’s profiles. Jeffrey Dahmer, David Berkowitz, Albert DeSalvo and others. It is also prevalent in Domestic Violence cases.

Rhode Island is or has worked with the FBI regarding this problem but it’s slow going. The FBI is working on putting Animal Cruelty Offenses with “Group A” crimes such as homicide, arson, and assault.

Rhode Island has new laws concerning breeding, shelter and rescue conditions, pet stores, etc. The problem is who is going to inspect these places?

In Rhode Island there are strict laws on Nail Salons. You can’t use a cuticle cutter. Guess what? They all do. I myself have been cut during a pedicure. The woman poured nail polish remover on the cut and put my foot back in the water. This is a big no no. I know this because I’m a Cosmetologist. I have never seen a Salon get inspected. NEVER. So when are the rescues and shelters going to get inspected? There is not enough manpower.

Sentencing needs change. It needs to be done on a case by case basis. No 2 year maximum. 2 years isn’t enough when a person kills a 5 pound Chihuahua and then throws it at someone like it’s garbage.

There was also a bunch of cases in New Jersey where they found dog’s that had been skinned. They had a teenage suspect. I don’t know about you but this screams HELP! to me. If they can. I believe Serial Killers are mostly born not made but that’s just me. I have seen the rare case where one is made but you have to have something inside of you to begin with. States need to pay more attention to their Animal Cruelty cases and install harsher penalties. I have a feeling this will be a continuing problem and can only hope it get’s better soon. For all our sakes.
